The Gemini 4 crew heads to the pad, June 1965.
The crew had wanted to name their ship the American Eagle, but NASA wasn’t having any more spacecraft names after the previous crew had named their ship the Molly Brown. So the crew decided to personalize their mission by wearing the American flag on their suit. Since then, wearing the flag on spacesuits has become a NASA tradition.
