8/12/71: “Astronaut Rockhounds: United States astronauts Joe Engle, left, and Alan Sheppard (sp) Tuesday examined a rock from a meteor crater believed to be 15 million years old at Noerdlingen, Germany. They are on a field trip studying the geology of the area which once may have looked like a lunar landscape but since has blended into the countryside. They hope their studies of this and similar rocks will aid them in their Apollo 14 mission scheduled January 31.”
