Since I’m doing “scary” photos for Halloween, I thought I might throw in this terrifying outtake of the famous LIFE magazine cover introducing the Mercury 7 astronauts. When the astronauts said they wanted to “beat the Soviets,” I think they meant “beat them with sticks.”
